What: A new App Server, new Tools and a new Attitude by Dan Allen

Register: Here -> http://www.meetup.com/dc-jug/events/44978342/.

Description: 2000 called, it wants its bloatware back. No where do the Java EE specifications suggest that application servers and programming models must be slow, clunky and fat. At JBoss, we decided it was time to flip the switch on enterprise development and make it productive. In this session, we’ll show you how to build real-world examples that are slim, fast and powerful. We’ll start by talking about the new rendition of our flagship project, JBoss AS 7. Fast, fast, fast. Blazing fast! No doubt, that’s the main reason to love JBoss AS 7. We’ll dive into how this performance boost has been achieved through a clever use of parallelism and concurrency, how the modular design saves you from classloader hell and why it’s such a pleasure to administer and test. It’s everything you’ve wanted in an application server.

Next, we’ll talk about how the Java EE Web Profile has brought new meaning to the double E: “easy” and “extensible”. We¹ll summarize the functionality you get out of the box. Hint: intelligent defaults replace XML and disparate technologies have been connected by powerful services like CDI. We won’t pretend that one size fits all. You’ll discover that the closed feature set has been abolished with the inclusion of the CDI extension facility. You now have the choice of building new features into the programming model in addition to using what’s provided. Ah, but, how many times have you wanted to start a new project in Java EE, but struggled to put all the pieces together? You’ll witness how Seam Forge can incrementally assemble an application at your command and deploy it to AS 7. We’ll remind you of the fact that you are doing all this with the “Enterprise Edition” of Java without any of the pain that would seem to imply. Like we said, we’ve got a new attitude. Come experience it.

Speaker: Dan Allen JBoss (@mojavelinux) As a Principal Software Engineer at JBoss, by Red Hat, Dan works as the community liaison and member of the Seam, Weld and Arquillian projects. He’s also the author of Seam in Action, formerly represented Red Hat on the JSR-314 Expert Group (JSF 2.0), writes for IBM developerWorks and NFJS magazine and participates as a speaker at major industry conferences including JavaOne, Devoxx, NFJS, JAX and Jazoon. In 2009, Dan was inducted into the JavaOne Rock Star Hall of Fame for his talk on conversations and pageflows in JSF. To colleagues, Dan’s known for his hard work and passion for Open Source technologies. He specializes in the Java EE stack, but is known to dabble in Android and anything else that’s open and sounds interesting.

You can keep up with Dan’s discoveries by reading his blogs at http://mojavelinux.com; and http://community.jboss.org/people/dan.j.allen/blog or find out what he’s currently up to by following him on Twitter at http://twitter.com/mojavelinux.

What: Hadoop and Hive by Scott Leberknight

Presentation Description: Hadoop is an open source framework maintained by the Apache Software Foundation for creating fault-tolerant, distributed applications that process vast amounts of data in parallel across a cluster of commodity servers. Hadoop consists of two primary components: the Hadoop Distributed Filesystem (HDFS) and a MapReduce framework. HDFS is a distributed filesystem which efficiently stores very large files across a cluster in a fault-tolerant manner. MapReduce is a framework for dividing data processing into two distinct phases, mapping and reducing, in order to deconstruct a problem so it can be run in parallel across many machines in order to speed data transformation and aggregation. In this talk we’ll look at both HDFS and the MapReduce framework. We’ll also look at one specific Hadoop subproject, Hive, which provides a data warehousing capability on top of Hadoop and allows developers and analysts to query their data stored in HDFS using SQL queries.

Speaker: Scott Leberknight is the Chief Architect at Near Infinity Corporation.

Sponsors: Pizza and Liquid Refreshments will be provided by the NovaJUG, which of course means by the generous sponsors of the NovaJUG (Near Infinity, Excella, and Appian), and PayPal is sponsoring some of the prizes for the best app winners.

Registration: Click HERE!

When: Sat April 30, 9:00 PM – 7:00 PM

The Android Hackathon is a not-for-profit event for the Android platform, encouraging development using both the native Android SDK and web standards.

At this one day event, participants will have an opportunity to design, develop and demo a complete application. There will also be a beginner opportunity that will help first-time Android developers become familiar with the basics of the Android ecosystem. The event kicks off on Saturday, April 30, 2011, where ideas and teams will come together. Teams will have the rest of the day to build their applications. Teams will then present their work to the public in the evening and winners will be chosen.

Instead of back-to-back presentations followed by several variations of “Hello World,” Hackathon is all about coding and completing a full-featured Android application using Android technologies. While there will be opportunities to try new APIs and learn new features, teams will be expected to produce a real, working application in one day in return for free meals and a chance for fame and fortune, should one create the next killer app.

Description: A decade ago, heavyweight ALM tools did more to impede developers than to support collaboration. With the move to Agile methodologies, the time has come to embrace lightweight collaboration and social coding tools to increase our velocity. For many Java developers, Mylyn has become the tool of choice for connecting team communication with coding. In 2010, Mylyn became a top-level Eclipse project and grew to support the entire Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) stack. This talk will overview of how Mylyn can double your Java coding output by bringing the entire workday into the place where you are most productive—your IDE. Demos will showcase how Mylyn’s task-focused interface integrates all leading task and Agile tools, SCM tools such as SVN and Git, and build/CI tools including Hudson. We will then review productivity best practices learned from deploying Mylyn at scale both in open source projects and large organizations. The talk will conclude with a vision of how realigning collaboration around a unified notion of tasks can yield a measurable productivity and knowledge capture benefit across the entire organization.

Speaker: Dr. Mik Kersten is the CEO of Tasktop Technologies, creator of the Eclipse Mylyn open source project and inventor of the task-focused interface. As a research scientist at Xerox PARC, Mik implemented the first aspect-oriented programming tools for AspectJ. He created Mylyn and the task-focused interface during his PhD in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. Mik has been an Eclipse committer since 2002, is an elected member of the Eclipse Board of Directors and serves on the Eclipse Architecture Council. Mik’s thought leadership on task-focused collaboration makes him a popular keynote speaker at software conferences, and he was voted a JavaOne Rock Star speaker in 2008 and 2009. Mik has also been recognized as one of the top ten IBM developerWorks Java technology writers of the decade. He enjoys building tools that offload our brains and make it easier to get creative work done.

Description: Many JSF Developers have not thrived with JSF 1.1 and 1.2, because of deficiencies in the language in those versions. But Java professional worldwide have invigorated the JSF 2.0 redo. JSF 1.2 turned out to be weak in many areas: it needed a good built-in templating structure, was awkward when it came to obtaining static resources, and needed additional event hooks; JSF 1.2 also needed Ajax integration, the ability to do composite components, to save state more efficiently, to use POST-REDIRECT-GET action instead of POST action, and a host of other smaller improvements. JSF 2.0 has infused JSF with life and given JSF back its edge by addressing these and other deficiencies. The Java EE community today now builds its health by adopting JSF 2.0!

Speaker: Michael A. Fons, who specializes in JSF and ADF development, lives with his family in Denver, CO and works in Fairfax, VA for Aderas as a ADF developer. He became an Oracle ACE in 2/2010, and has worked with Oracle products his whole 20-year programming career. Michael has spent the last 9 years focusing on web development, Java, J2EE and ADF. He presented at Oracle Open World 2009 on the subject of JSF Custom Components, and also presented in the Virginia area at NoVAJUG, a local Java User’s Group. Throughout his career Michael has contributed to public technical forums and organizations and has presented many times in Denver, CO at RMOUG Training Days. He has also worked with ODTUG in the past as a editor/columnist for their technical journal.

Description: Google Web Toolkit (GWT) lets you build and optimize rich browser-based apps without having to be an expert in browser quirks, XMLHttpRequest, or JavaScript. Google AppEngine lets you build and host scalable Web applications written in Python or Java on Google’s infrastructure. In this talk, we’ll look at how to build and deploy a GWT+GAE application with Google Plugin for Eclipse and the GWT 2.1 application framework: MVP architecture with Activities and Places, persistence layer with RequestFactory and the GAE Datastore, and UI data binding with the Editor framework. We’ll also take a peek at GWT
Designer for Eclipse and performance optimization with SpeedTracer.

Speaker: David Chandler works with the Google Web Toolkit Team in Atlanta. An electrical engineer by training, Chandler got hooked on developing database Web applications in the days of NCSA Mosaic and has since written Web applications professionally in a variety of languages, including C, perl, ksh, ColdFusion, Java, JSF, and GWT. Prior to joining Google, Chandler worked on Internet banking applications with Intuit and launched a non-profit startup built with GWT and AppEngine. Chandler holds a patent on a method of organizing hierarchical data in a relational database and blogs about Java Web development at turbomanage.wordpress.com.

Location: OPower HQ – 1515 North Courthouse Road, on the 6th floor, in Arlington- right off the Orange Line of the DC Metro (Courthouse Stop)
